Perceptions
A New Musical
"Perceptions" is a musical in which a well-intentioned playwright must decide between his dream and his integrity while writing his show about covert operations for the “greater good” which mirror the betrayals and deceptions in his life.
Summary
The musical “Perceptions” opens in a New York coffee shop where a group of struggling actors, including the talented but under-recognized Stephanie, celebrate receiving callbacks for a new production titled “Deceptions.” The show is produced by Mildred Fullard, a veteran who prioritizes financial survival over artistic ideals, and her timid son, Leslie, who serves as the writer/director. Unknown to Mildred, Leslie and Stephanie are secretly dating.
As rehearsals begin, Stephanie challenges Leslie on his lazy writing and rainbow-colored propaganda in his script. Encouraged by Stephanie, Leslie begins rewriting the show into a radical anti-interventionist piece. When Mildred discovers the secret relationship and the ideological shift, she threatens to pull funding unless Leslie reverts to the original marketable version.
Choosing artistic integrity over his mother's approval, Leslie breaks away from Mildred’s production company. The new version of “Deceptions” centers on the CIA agent, played by Stephanie, and a rebel, played by Violet, who attempts to expose corruption. Tommy portrays the agent’s handler who is a pragmatist rising through the political ranks. He betrays Stephanie's agent but initially spares her life. In the play's climax, he must choose between protecting his position and saving Stephanie's agent.
The parallels between Perceptions and Deceptions become increasingly apparent as Leslie stands up to his mother and refuses to compromise his artistic integrity for her commercialism. The cast, inspired by the themes of their own play, decides to take a risk and stage “Deceptions” themselves. This bold move mirrors the agent’s rebellious spirit, blurring the lines between art and life. The cast successfully produces the show for one night only with some level of success. This success is cut short with Mildred’s appearance when she must choose between losing her career and losing Leslie.

One of the songs from "Perceptions" was featured in Musicolab's cabaret "New Songs For a New Year". It was performed by Will Stephan Connell with Linda Henderson on the piano.
